The rowing sport was first introduced in the Czech city of Přerov in 1932. The local rowing club has organized an exhibition to mark the 85th anniversary.

The development of rowing in Přerov was facilitated by the construction of a weir on the outskirts of the city in the 1930s, securing stable water levels up the stream of the Bečva River.

The rowing club in Přerov boasts a number of trophies. Among its members is Valentýna Kolářová, the stroke of the Czech junior women's eight that won the world championships in 2017.

One of them, of Prague's Charles University, was reinforced by the Olympic champion in women's single sculls, Mirka Knapková. The race was taken by the Czech Technical University followed by Cambridge, the Czech University of Life Sciences, Charles University, and Prague University of Economics, respectively.

Postponed from the originally planned June term due to flooding, the Prague Mayor's Eights rowing regatta has marked the 100th edition this year. It features an open race of men's eights and a number of accompanying races of eights and singles. Next to the varsity race, the Cambridge boat had entered the main competition of men's eights on a two-kilometres' distance too but did not make it through semifinals. As in previous years, the victory went to Dukla, a Prague-based elite club and men's national rowing team hub sponsored by the Czech Ministry of Defense.

UPDATE 2: The FISA website came on 2 October with a news article on Prague Mayor's Eights. Floods have also hit neighbouring countries – Austria, Slovakia, and Germany.

As for the Vltava river that runs through the Czech capital Prague, the flood reached its peak on Tuesday, 4 June, and the flood danger has since been imminent down the stream, on the Labe (in German: Elbe) river.

Although the water volume stayed below the historically record 2002 flood in most of the affected areas, several rowing clubs have been damaged too.

Set up by Czech rowers, the Facebook website “Veslaři a povodně 2013” (Rowers and the 2013 Flood) monitors the situation. Photos of the flooded boat parks are being posted and offers of a helping hand released.

As a today’s post informs, four rowing shells have been damaged in Litoměřice, the original hometown of the Czech Olympic rowers Milan Doleček and Milan Bruncvík, the latter of whom had represented Cambridge in this year’s Boat Race. Judging from the pictures, Mělník will probably be among the heavily affected rowing clubs.

In Prague, the only rowing club that obviously has not been affected by the flood is Dukla, the elite base of men’s national team. Officials of the clubs remember that the cleaning and reparation works in 2002 took at least one week but up to six months, depending on the extent of exposure to water and mud.

On 3 June, the only iconic rowing race in the Czech Republic has been cancelled due to water conditions. Known in English as Prague Mayor’s Eights (in Czech mostly in a shortened form, “Primátorky”), the 100th edition of the regatta was planned to take place on 7-9 June. A new term has been set to 20-22 September.

Komentátoři televizního kanálu BBC World, který závod vysílal v přímém přenosu, před startem mírně favorizovali právě Oxford.

V posádce Cambridge vesloval i Milan Bruncvík, první český účastník v historii závodu.

As the media in her homeland intensely discussed after the victorious race, she had gone through the whole Olympic regatta with an injury.

Knapková’s progression at Eton Dorney looked as clear as it could be: she won her heat (on 28 July), quarterfinal (31 July), and semifinal (2 August).

But, at the start of the A final (4 August), Czech Television’s commentator Pavel Čapek revealed to the audience that the Czech sculler “was fighting serious health problems”. It turned out that there was a problem but only Knapková’s close circle knew about it, including a few journalist fellow-countrymen – and they decided to keep it secret so that the sculler does not get distracted by media attention and her rivals are not granted psychological advantage.

As rowing observers (including Czech men’s sculling coach, Milan Doleček Sr.) pointed out, it probably was due to the health challenge that Knapková reached the perfect concentration and her rowing style became simpler and more economic.

“Being close to such an achievement will stay inside me until the end of my life,” says Czech physiotherapy doctor Pavel Kolář who helped the rower in her critical moments. In an interview published on the Czech news website Idnes.cz (affiliated with a broad-circulation daily, Mladá fronta Dnes) on 27 December 2012, Kolář remembers how he was called to help after the heats of women’s singles: “The whole of Mirka’s shoulder-blade hurt. Even my intervention didn’t show any remarkable improvement.” An MRI screening indicated a torn shoulder-blade fixator.

As Kolář recalls the morning of the quarterfinal day, “Mirka went out for a warm-up row on the venue and came back in ten minutes in tears, saying it doesn’t work, and that she wouldn’t go.” Just at the breakfast did the therapist, the athlete and her coach, Tomáš Kacovský, agree they would give it a try. In Kolář’s words, “we said we would try a solid kinesiotaping, apply medicaments and acupuncture. All that done with a risk that she might finish within the first meters but still didn’t have anything to lose.” And it worked.

With Mission Quarterfinal accomplished, the doctor continued to perform his art. In the days between races, “we conducted physical therapies, laser procedures, acupuncture, and everything possible to somehow decrease pain and edema. Of course, we also included some medicaments that she could take within the limits of sport competition,” Kolář describes how he treated Knapková during the Olympics.

Website Idnes.cz concludes the interview with the rehabilitation specialist by quoting the Czech Rowing Association President, Jiří Kejval, who said after the Olympic finals of women’s singles: “If it hadn’t been for Pavel Kolář, we wouldn’t have had the Olympic champion.”

Knapková’s victory may be the most stunning rowing achievement of its kind since the fabulous performance of Canada’s Silken Laumann who earned the bronze medal in the 1992 Olympic final of women’s single although she rowed with a severe leg injury.

The Magician of Sport

It was not for the first time that Pavel Kolář, 49 years of age, helped a Czech athlete to overcome bodily woes. The university teacher of physiotherapy earlier healed Olympic winners such as Jan Železný (javelin throw), Roman Šebrle (decathlon), Martin Doktor (canoe sprint), Jaromír Jágr (ice hockey), and Kateřina Neumannová (crosscountry skiing). Among his “common” patients were Czech Republic’s presidents, Václav Havel and Václav Klaus.

Days After the Gold

Due to the injury, the post-Olympic Knapková was ordered to observe physical rest for six weeks. Her first travel led her back to Great Britain where she had planned a vacation with friends in Wales. She found herself back in the rowing shell in late September at city sprints in Lucerne, Switzerland (where she won) and surfed further on the Swiss wave: in late October at Armada Cup near Bern (second only to the local sculler, Pamela Weisshaupt) and then in mid-November at Basel Head (winning with her club’s eight).

Though rowing is a rather marginal sport in the Czech Republic, Knapková admitted to the media it was pleasant to know that people in the streets started to recognise her but at the same time found out there was no mercantile value added to it (“I haven‘t shot any commercial”, she told a journalist).

On 19 December, Knapková was clasified third in the Czech Athlete of the Year, a nationwide sports journalists’ poll, where her rowing success had to compete for attention with the country’s other three Olympic champions.

For the next season, the queen of Czech sculling thinks of adding another racing event to the single – in her words, “the bigger the boat will be, the better”.

Do každého závodu byly pozvány maximálně čtyři posádky.

V medailové tabulce by Čechy přeskočili pouze domácí Britové následovaní Novým Zélandem, Německem a Řeckem.

Zbývající dvě olympijské posádky z České republiky – mužské čtyřky standardních a lehkých vah – USA Today nezařadil do očekávané první osmičky umístěných.

He has passed away during a morning training session on the Danube river in his hometown, Smederevo (Смедерево).

YouTube screen grab from a local television report on the funeral of Nemanja Nešić on 8 June 2012.

Nemanja Nešić rowed on Wednesday, 6 June in a lightweight double scull with partner Miloš Stanojević (Милош Станојевић), accompanied in a motorboat by coach Dejan Guslov (Дејан Гуслов). The Secretary-General of the Serbian Rowing Federation, Nebojša Jevremović (Небојша Јевремовић) described the tragedy as follows: “Nemanja got sick during the training. The fellow-rower from the boat hurried to help him and so did the coach. (…) They immediately took him off the boat and went to the shore where an ambulance was waiting. But, unfortunately, he had already been dead.” The ambulance team tried to resuscitate Nešić but in vain, Serbia’s rowing head told the media on 6 June.

Speaking about the regular medical testing, Jevremović said: “Nothing showed that a tragedy might happen. Nemanja had been a member of the national team for eight years, and, just as other team members, he would undergo a medical check twice a year. Last time he went for the check five months ago and the results simply did not indicate any problem.”

The chairman of the Serbian Olympic Committee, Vlade Divac (Владе Дивац) told the Serbian media on 7 June that Nešić was even scheduled for a regular medical check on that date, one day before which he had passed away. In Divac’s words, “Nemanja Nešić passed the last medical check in November and also in the meantime underwent common medical testing for athletes. Today, on Thursday, he was about to go for another check.”

An online version of Serbia’s Sportski Žurnal (Спортски Журнал) newspaper wrote on 7 June that international anti-doping commissioners visited Nešić in Smederevo some ten days before his sudden death and the doping test was negative.

Nešić was buried in Smederevo on 8 June. A judge in charge of investigation of his death had ordered an autopsy but no details have been published in the Serbian media so far. Only a Vesti Online article of 7 June held on to the general assumption that Nešić “probably had a heart attack”.

According to a biography still displayed on the website of the Serbian Rowing Federation, the late Nemanja Nešić was 185 centimetres tall, weighed 71 kilograms and started rowing in 2001. He was born in Smederevo city, some 50 kilometres southeast of Belgrade, and rowed for the local club. Nešić studied at Megatrend University and was receiving financial support from the Serbian Ministry of Youth and Sports. He has earned two bronze medals from European Rowing Championships, both in lightweight fours: in 2009 and 2011, respectively.

Nešić’s last international competition was the Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland on 22 May, where the Serbian crew narrowly missed the qualification spots for London 2012.

Women’s 2011 world champion, Mirka Knapková, and the holder of men’s 2010 world title, Ondřej Synek, are both staying home with a plan to focus on training for the Olympic regatta.

The decision of the nation’s best rowers has been reported in a Czech News Agency (ČTK) news piece quoted in Czech media outlets on 14 June.

Obviously unaware of the absence of New Zealand’s Mahé Drysdale due to a traffic accident injury, the text takes for granted that Synek is still likely to retain his leadership in the overall classification of the World Cup. Yet now, the game is open and Great Britain’s Alan Campbell will be the front-runner for the total World Cup victory.

Napotřetí to vyšlo!

They have been nominated in their categories of women's crews and coaches, respectively. The winners are due to be known on 11 November, the International Rowing Federation (FISA) has announced on its website.

As the Idnes.cz news website (affiliated with a broad circulation newspaper, Mladá fronta Dnes) wrote on 2 October, Knapková and Kacovský have been training together for eleven years. Within that period, they were also life partners for six years. That part of relationship broke up but their sport cooperation continues. “That was very demanding. At that moment, you must get clear what you want. It would have been easier to split up, say 'good-bye', and find another coach. But what was connecting us was that both of us wanted to achieve something in the sport. I believed that he as a coach is one of the best,” said Knapková to Idnes.cz.

The same news website quoted Knapková on 4 September as praising Kacovský for “looking for new incentives all the time”. One of them was the engagement of a sport psychologist – not for the athlete but for the coach himself, something that Knapková proposed, initially maybe half-jokingly. This year's world and European champion in women's single, Knapková says about her coach: “He is with me practically 24 hours a day and I sense his temper. Every coach passes his nervousness on to the athlete. When the coach is nervous, the athlete can feel it. It definitely helped me [to get a psychologist for the coach]: when I felt he was calm, I too went to the start line more relaxed.”

(UPDATE: The FISA announced on its website on 11 November that the Greek lightweight women's double scull, Christina Giazitzidou and Alexandra Tsiavou, have been chosen as the 2011 World Rowing Female Crew of the Year. Rowing scenes are included as if it were just by the way but you can indulge in them throughout the whole film: Onur practicing on an erg at home, going out in a single or a double, racing in a quad, checking the slide, getting off a Galatasaray Rowing jersey, sleeping in the boat park...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 212px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicjImjeES5uBtiy26VeGoehWYFPVRCHEuiJGCAMvhwHpe488Nd8zYHvzebeCLa4c8VKWnEe1v93ABpThpWoSSsE3-c7cqRZBYONdBrsIYz6UK8cyhf0XEBQSJFNa3A5C3gnhtIwRpSEIk/s400/Baska+dilde+Camera+A.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5663482437905435058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 219px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijKpQMSlVq_gJvX8CVEB0ykpuV9_DiNMRdaFZFAM5vwsibj0eqpOfw_8XF-Um7QL9ELFI7WVM5E6dl2-65JK51EKaDloFaAv65wgGSQFBBinoFZn4ftmDenuB_yl0EhQ93ETu7s8QOgps/s400/Baska+dilde+Double.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5663485426111003330" />

Especially impressive is the main role actor's performance: Fırat had to enter two unfamiliar worlds – sign language and rowing – and mastered their rules with bravura and full spontaneity. It is an ointment for the soul of a rowing lover to see that actors in a film that incorporates rowing shots can really row – much more credibly than, say, in “Summer Storm” (Sommersturm) of 2004, not speaking about the truly catastrophic “Fandy, Oh Fandy” of 1983 (a Czech film that has disappeared from the YouTube so the potential spectators cannot join the suffering of the main characters, thrown by the merciless director into the most difficult rowing boat – a coxless pair – without any traces of training). In the “fiction film with rowing” category, the Turks have demonstrated excellence, the Germans have much to fine-tune, and the Czechs have a considerable debt.

<img style="display:block;
